What to try, in order
- Give traction where your dog rests. Many dogs can stand on a rug but not on bare floor.
- Use a lift harness or sling so you lift through the chest and pelvis instead of hauling on the belly or back legs. AAHA recommends "fitted and padded harnesses to aid with lifting larger pets."
- For rear-only weakness, a rear sling (GingerLead-style) is quick to put on. For whole-body weakness or large dogs, a full harness with front and rear handles (Help 'Em Up-style) can stay on all day.
- Raise food and water bowls so your dog isn't straining down (AAHA).
